Leonora Casey Carr

Leonora Casey Carr (1808-26 April 1837):
Tytherton Moravian Church, East Tytherton, Chippenham, SN15 4LX

A simple slab in a Moravian churchyard was recently revealed as that of a former slave. Leonora Carr was born in Antigua, the daughter of a planter, George Carr, and a mulatto slave, Fanny Loving. As slavery had not yet been abolished in the British dominions, she inherited the slave status of her mother. Slave registers show that on 27th November,1813, she was bought from Eliza B Ledeatt, sent to England in early 1817, and manumitted on 1st April 1817. Details uncovered by local historian, Nigel Pocock, show that she was enrolled in the Moravian school where her connection with General Carr gave her not inconsiderable status.

She appears to have fully embraced the teachings of the Moravian Church, before dying in 1837 at the age of 28.
